Google Launches Desktop Version of Nearby Share for Windows 10 and 11

Google Drops Desktop Version of Nearby Share for Windows 10 and 11, Making File Transfers Between Android and PC a Breeze, Google Nearby Share for Windows – How to Cross-Platform File Sharing.

In an announcement today, Google unveiled the official desktop release of Nearby Share for Windows 10 and 11, finally bringing the handy file transfer feature that Android users love to PCs. After months of beta testing that saw over 1.7 million testers send more than 50 million files between devices, Google is ready to deliver Nearby Share to the masses.

“We’re thrilled to officially launch Nearby Share for Windows so even more people can quickly and easily get files where they need to go,” said Sanaz Ahari, director of product management for Google. “We can’t wait to see how this helps Windows users simplify file sharing between their devices.”

Nearby Share for Windows includes some nifty new goodies not found in the Android version. You’ll now get estimated transfer times when sending big files like videos or massive folders, a handy feature for gauging how long you’ll need to keep your computer awake. The notifications also now preview images so you can confirm you’re sending the right file instead of the wrong one – no more photo fiascos.

While Nearby Share will work on any Windows 10 or 11 device, Google has specifically optimized the experience for select laptops. For example, HP’s new Dragonfly Pro laptop will come with Nearby Share pre-installed and ready to share right out of the box.

The launch on Windows is the latest expansion of Nearby Share as Google seeks to eliminate all the pesky friction that comes with shuttling files between devices. The company launched the feature on Android an AirDrop alternative for quickly sending links, photos and more to nearby Android phones.

Nearby Share makes the often mundane task of transferring files less of a headache – no more fussing with cables, thumb drives or uploading files to the cloud. Just turn on Nearby Share, select your file, pick a nearby device and beam it over in seconds. It’s file sharing, perfected.
