iOS 27 starts rolling out, and it brings more than routine interface changes. Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple adds a physical aperture control, a storage system tuned for high-bitrate video, and a new way for apps to route media to outside speakers and TVs. None of these updates draw much attention alone. Together, they suggest Apple wants the iPhone to work as a production tool, not simply a point-and-shoot camera.
Every iPhone camera before this one has shipped with a fixed aperture. Portrait mode could simulate a shallower depth of field, but that effect was computational rather than an actual change to the lens opening. iPhone 18 Pro replaces that limitation with a mechanical aperture that moves across four settings, ranging from f/1.48 at its widest to f/4.0 at its narrowest. Users can let the Camera app pick a setting automatically, or select one directly depending on the shot.
That control doesn’t stop at Apple’s own app, either. Notably, third-party developers get access to an aperture-control API, and Apple says that access spans the entire aperture range rather than the four presets available in the stock interface.
For camera-app makers, that’s the detail worth watching. An app addressing intermediate f-stops, not just four fixed points, can offer finer exposure control and more deliberate depth-of-field transitions during video capture. Expect specialized camera apps to treat this as a selling point almost immediately.
Apple’s front camera upgrade tells a similar story. 18MP Center Stage camera now supports ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and ACES, tools long reserved for the rear system. Pro Controls add shutter speed, white balance, and a live histogram to the front lens, while a new stabilized time-lapse option adds 4K Dolby Vision, and the sensor can record up to 4K60 in ProRes to an external drive. None of that matters for a video call, but it matters for a creator who wants a second usable angle without switching devices.
High-bitrate formats create a practical problem before a creative one. Conventional file-system input-output doesn’t guarantee consistent write speeds during a long, heavy recording session, and ProRes needs steady, high-throughput writes so frames don’t drop. iOS 27 addresses that with AVProVideoStorage, a system that pre-allocates storage for high-bitrate capture and treats it as a shared resource across apps. That reservation keeps the write pipeline steady instead of competing for space mid-shoot.
A new Now Playing framework also debuts in iOS 27, and its role extends well beyond any single app. It brings a unified way to surface media controls across the Lock Screen, Control Center, Dynamic Island, CarPlay, and other system surfaces, alongside Remote Media Sessions, which represent playback happening on an external device such as a smart speaker.
More consequential piece, though, is Media Sharing Extensions. Previously, an app supporting several smart TVs or speakers had to build against each manufacturer’s SDK on its own, which meant duplicated work for every new platform.
Media Sharing Extensions reverse that model: the app hands off its media-sharing support through an extension, and the system’s own device picker takes over finding and routing to compatible hardware. In practice, Apple is pulling a slice of that integration work out of individual apps and building it into the operating system instead. For developers supporting a mix of TVs, speakers, and protocols, that should mean noticeably less duplicated work going forward.
