Pixel 8 and 8 Pro Supports Display Output to External Monitor via USB-C to HDMI adapter

Exciting news for Google Pixel 8 owners, X/Twitter user Mishaal Rahman has discovered the phone actually supports display output to external monitors. This means the Pixel 8 could enable using the phone like a desktop computer.

Rahman shared a method to activate DisplayPort alt mode on the Pixel 8, allowing video output over USB-C, successfully tested an HDMI adapter and external display.

Another developer confirmed getting display output working on their Pixel 8 Pro using the same steps. This indicates the capability is fully baked into the hardware, just disabled in software.

Since enabling external monitor support only requires changing a single system property flag, Google could theoretically activate the feature via an OTA update.

Display output would allow Pixel 8 owners to connect their phone to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse for a desktop-like work experience. This could complement workspace dock accessories like the upcoming Pixel Tablet Dock.

While not confirmed yet, hopes are high that Google will embrace this power-user capability in a future update. The developer community has essentially done the hard work already.

The fact that this works after changing a single system property means Google could enable display output in an OTA update if they want, suspect they’re waiting until Android’s desktop mode is in a better state, though.

With its powerful Google Tensor G3 chip, display support finally gives the Pixel 8 the potential to be an always-connected pocket workstation.
