DJI has unveiled Osmo Pocket 3, delivering major upgrades to the compact stabilized camera while retaining its ultra-portable form factor. Headlining the improvements is a much larger 1-inch sensor for drastically enhanced image quality.
The new 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor dwarfs the 1/1.7-inch sensor found in the previous Osmo Pocket versions, with a 3.2-micron equivalent pixel size, it brings significant low light and dynamic range benefits. Autofocus also improves with the addition of on-sensor phase detection.
Despite the bigger sensor, DJI managed to keep the same equivalent 20mm f/2.0 lens specifications. Users can shoot regular 16:9 stills or cropped 1:1 square photos.
Video resolution gets a major boost as well, now covering 4K 60fps, 1080p 240fps slow-motion, and even vertical 3K 60fps formats. 10-bit HLG and D-Log M profiles add professional color grading options.
The built-in screen grows to a sharp 2-inch OLED panel with better brightness and wide color gamut performance. It can flip 180-degrees to properly frame selfie shots.
A new intelligent subject tracking algorithm joins the existing FaceTrack and ActiveTrack modes for effortlessly following moving subjects.
Three-axis mechanical stabilization provides reliable shake-free footage with selectable smoothness levels. The gimbal rotates a full 180-degrees and can be locked in place when not needed.
With a larger 1250mAh battery, recording times jump substantially. Users can capture over 1.5 hours of 4K 60fps video on a charge. Fast charging via USB-C takes only 32 minutes.
For audio, built-in directional microphones provide crisp sound. DJI’s wireless MIC 2 transmitter integrates seamlessly without any extra components needed.
Pocket 3 starts at $519, a sizable jump from the Pocket 2’s $349 launch price, also offers a $669 Combo kit with accessories like a microphone, tripod mount, and filters.
DJI has once again driven the compact stabilized camera category forward with the Osmo Pocket 3, considerably larger 1-inch sensor unlocks vastly improved image quality, while comprehensive upgrades make this an even more versatile creative tool.
