AMD Takes Wraps Off Ryzen 8040 CPUs to Democratize Powerful AI Experiences

AMD CEO Lisa Su returned to the stage after unveiling next-gen GPU and APU data center hardware to shift the spotlight to Ryzen AI consumer chips putting serious machine learning muscle into everyday PCs.

Now, AMD builds on this momentum with the freshly revealed Ryzen 8040 series processors, code named “Hawk Point”.

New Ryzen 8040 lineup began shipping to manufacturers and integrates up to 16 TOPS of peak AI performance thanks to AMD’s updated XDNA neural processing architecture, enables 8040 chips to handle AI inferencing workloads 3X faster than prior generation hardware, optimizing laptops for AI multi-tasking on popular software from Adobe to Microsoft.

In fact, a Microsoft executive joined Lisa Su in discussing how tools like Copilot − which suggests whole blocks of code using deep learning algorithms to boost programmer productivity − see dramatic speed boosts running on Ryzen systems. Over 75% of Ryzen 8040 models launching in 2024 will pack dedicated on-chip AI acceleration, up considerably from the Ryzen 7040 family.

Lisa explained that under the hood, the updated Ryzen AI silicon on 8040 chips operates the integrated neural processing unit (NPU) at far higher peak clock speeds to unlock those hefty efficiency gains. Up to 60% faster clocks translate directly to snappier AI experiences for consumers, rapid unified memory access to system RAM further reduces latency.

This focus helps AMD’s Ryzen processors stand apart from rival Intel’s coming discrete AI chips built purely for inference workloads. By baking responsive AI into their mainstream notebook CPUs using Ryzen’s tried-and-true technological foundations, AMD gives partners seamless access to cutting edge machine learning capabilities that users will genuinely appreciate.

Looking ahead, AMD teased a next-generation platform code named “Strix Point” where efficiency optimizations could triple AI TOPS again around 2024 timeframe. As AI permeates across personal and professional realms, Ryzen systems have an opportunity to deliver a balance of performance for both conventional and machine learning tasks in slick mobile form factors.

Judging by Lisa’s optimistic reveal, AMD sees Ryzen as the ultimate ally in democratizing speedy, satisfying AI experiences beyond the data center − into the hands of students, creators, coders, and otherPersistent innovators who crave a machine learning edge.
