Huawei’s Rumored 15,000 RMB Vision Headset – What We Know So Far

Rumor has it that Huawei is developing a new virtual reality headset called Vision that could launch at around 15,000 RMB (roughly $2,100). This would put it in direct competition with premium VR headsets like the Meta Quest Pro and Apple vision pro. But what do we actually know about Huawei’s mysterious new headset so far?

According to reports, the Huawei Vision will utilize one of the company’s own self-developed chips. The goal is to offer “virtually no latency” when using the headset for spatial computing or immersed in a virtual environment. Reduced latency is key for providing a comfortable, natural XR experience, so Huawei is wise to focus on this.

In terms of display, it looks like the Vision will use a 4K Micro-OLED panel supplied by Sony. Sources say this display could be ready to ship in just six months, hinting at a potential 2024 launch for the full Vision headset. The headset is expected to be fairly lightweight too at just 350 grams.

Interestingly, it seems the Vision won’t have Huawei’s “eyesight” tech for eye-tracking and foveated rendering that is present in the high-end Apple Vision Pro. This might help Huawei hit that $2,100 price point and make the Vision more accessible to consumers.

Huawei isn’t new to AR and VR hardware. In 2021, it launched the Vision Glass, a pair of smart glasses designed primarily for immersive movie viewing. It featured dual 1080p Micro-OLED displays in a glasses-like form factor. The company also trademarked “Vision Pro” back in 2019, so they have likely been working on a more advanced and versatile headset successor for a while now behind the scenes.

The rumor mill will likely continue churning out more details about Huawei’s Vision headset as we get closer to its suspected launch next year. But it’s clear Huawei wants to be a major player in the spatial computing space. The Vision could give the likes of Meta and Apple some serious competition in the high-end VR market, especially in China. We’ll have to wait and see if the Vision lives up to the hype when it eventually sees the light of day.
