Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 Ushers in a New Era of AI-Powered 5G Modem Connectivity

Qualcomm has unveiled its 7th gen 5G modem Snapdragon X80, as the company’s new gen 5G solution, it represents a major leap forward for smart, efficient 5G connectivity powered by artificial intelligence.

The Snapdragon X80 stands out by being the first integrated modem-RF system with support for NB-NTN satellite communications, allows connectivity in areas without traditional cell coverage through partnerships between operators and satellite companies, X80 is poised to provide truly global 5G access.

In addition to satellite, the modem pushes the boundaries of 5G speeds and performance. Its 6-antenna design enables astonishing peak rates up to 10 Gbps downlink and 3.5 Gbps uplink. This bests the previous X65 modem capable of 10 Gbps down and 3 Gbps up. The X80 also unlocks cutting-edge carrier aggregation up to 6x in sub-6 GHz spectrum.

But it’s not all about bleeding-edge speeds – the X80’s real magic lies in using AI to optimize 5G connections on the fly. Dedicated tensor cores power intelligent algorithms that boost reliability and battery life. For example, AI extends mmWave range while reducing beam selection time by 30%.

According to Durga Malladi, SVP at Qualcomm, “Leveraging AI is critical to the future of connectivity. This milestone underscores Qualcomm’s leadership in AI and modem-RF technology.”

So how does this benefit users? The integrated AI Suite optimizes signal strength to improve battery efficiency. It also enables faster mobility between cell towers and 5G bands. Overall, Qualcomm promises up to 60% quicker 5G across different usage scenarios.

The cutting-edge Snapdragon X80 is sampling now and expected to ship in commercial devices using the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 platform in the second half of 2024. This will likely include Android flagships toward the end of the year.

With its integrated satellite connectivity, blistering 10 Gbps speeds, and AI optimization, the X80 represents the pinnacle of modern 5G modems. It paves the way for smarter, more ubiquitous 5G networks and devices. Once again, Qualcomm is pushing the boundaries of wireless communication as 5G continues to evolve worldwide.
