Samsung Gets Loopy With the Galaxy Ring: A Minimalist Smart Ring for 24/7 Wellness

Samsung is embracing the tiny with their just-announced Galaxy Ring, a diminutive wearable device built for 24/7 health and wellness monitoring. Galaxy Ring comes in three stylish colors – Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold – and in a wide range of sizes from 5 to 13 to fit different fingers. It’s Samsung’s smallest wearable yet, intended for comfortable all-day and all-night use. But does this mini gadget pack a health monitoring punch?

The Galaxy Ring works together with Samsung’s new My Vitality health app for Galaxy S24 phones to provide a holistic view of wellness. Key features include sleep tracking, monitoring of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and step counting. While it doesn’t support calling functions yet, Samsung says the Ring can last up to 5 days on a single charge – up to 9 days with limited usage.

“With Galaxy Ring, you can use it for up to 5 to a maximum of 9 days without the need for recharging,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience at Samsung Electronics. “It doesn’t support calling functions yet, but it can measure sleep information and blood oxygen saturation. There’s a sensor attached to the Galaxy Ring that transfers information to the phone.”

This data could provide useful insights, especially regarding sleep quality. Samsung highlighted features in development that can detect signs of sleep apnea, a common but underdiagnosed breathing disorder. Features like these earned Samsung FDA clearance for the Ring as a general wellness device.

But Samsung sees the Galaxy Ring as just the start of an integrated approach to personalized, preventative health. The company is exploring partnerships to connect Ring data to real-world products and services, like a smart mattress that optimizes sleep temperature. Samsung also plans to integrate Ring features into its SmartThings ecosystem for managing a connected home.

So while the Ring itself may seem simple, its potential is much broader. This bite-sized wearable could enable big changes in digital healthcare and the quantified self movement. With its minimalist ring form factor for all-day use, Samsung is betting that less can be more when it comes to personal wellness tracking.
