Inside the Vision Pro BOM Whopping $1,836 Cost: Sony’s OLED Dominates

Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset will set early adopters back a cool $3,499. But have you wondered what’s behind that eye-watering price tag? Well, thanks to some serious hardware sleuthing by the analysts at Omdia, we’re getting an inside look at the Vision Pro’s bill of materials (BOM) – and Sony’s high-end OLEDoS microdisplays are gobbling up a huge chunk of that cost.

According to Omdia’s Vision Pro BOM analysis, Sony’s state-of-the-art OLEDoS microdisplays alone account for a staggering $640 or nearly 35% of the headset’s $1,836 total materials cost.

Sony’s OLED supremacy doesn’t stop there, components are currently supplied exclusively by the Japanese tech giant, making it a critical partner for Apple’s mixed reality ambitions. No wonder they’re commanding such a premium!

While Sony is monopolizing the microdisplay game for now, the Vision Pro is a truly global collaboration under the hood. South Korean heavyweights like LG Display, Samsung, and SK Hynix are chipping in with curved OLED panels and memory semiconductors totaling around $120.

The Vision Pro custom M2 and R1 processors together ring in at a cool $240 according to the estimates.
