Details are starting to emerge about the camera system slated for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra flagship phone. According to recent leaks from noted tipster Ice Universe, the S24 Ultra will pack an upgraded 200MP main sensor along with three additional lenses including a periscope for extreme optical zoom.
The headline feature is expected to be a new 200MP HP2SX sensor measuring a huge 1/1.3″ with 0.6 micron pixels. This should provide amazing resolution and light capture for the primary lens.
Meanwhile, the ultra-wide angle will reportedly use a 12MP Sony IMX564, the same sensor as the S23 Ultra. A 10MP Sony IMX754 will handle 3x telephoto duties.
Most interestingly, the S24 Ultra is said to add a 5x optical telephoto lens using a 50MP Sony IMX875 sensor. With a folded optics design, this will enable 5x optical zoom for sharper long-distance shots.
Combined with hybrid zoom technology, Samsung is still touting 100x space zoom for the S24 Ultra. This hands the zoom crown back to Samsung after the S23 Ultra dropped to only 30x hybrid zoom.
With these upgrades, especially the 200MP main sensor, Samsung is pushing camera capabilities to new heights. After ceding ground to Apple’s camera prowess recently, the S24 Ultra should help Samsung reclaim the photographic performance crown.
Of course, real-world testing will provide the final verdict. But on paper, the S24 Ultra camera spec sheet looks set to impress while iterative updates come elsewhere. Samsung is clearly betting big on its camera hardware innovations to headline the S24.
