Huawei Mate 60 Pro Launches with Satellite Connectivity, 5G Network Coming?

Huawei has unveiled its latest annual flagship smartphone Huawei Mate 60 Pro, bringing several new innovations including satellite communication capabilities.

The Mate 60 Pro features Huawei’s own Kirin 9000S processor with an integrated 5G modem. Early benchmarks indicate download speeds reaching 5G standards, suggesting support for China’s 5G networks.

In line with Mate series design, the phone sports a symmetrical curved display and circular camera housing on the back. The unique halo ring housing is reminiscent of 2020’s Mate 40.

The rear camera array packs some serious imaging firepower. It consists of a 50MP main wide camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 48MP periscope telephoto with OIS and support for macro photography.

On the front, a pill-shaped cutout houses a 13MP ultrawide selfie camera and a 3D depth sensor. This enables futuristic features like 3D face unlock, touchless gestures, and eye tracking.

Mate 60 Pro display measures 6.8-inches diagonally with an FHD+ resolution. It uses a next-gen Kunpeng glass for durability and employs LTPO technology for adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rates.

Powering the experience is a large 5000mAh battery supporting fast 88W wired and 50W wireless charging. The phone carries an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

But the real headline feature is satellite connectivity, a first for a mass-market smartphone. Without cellular coverage, the Mate 60 Pro can send texts and make voice calls via satellite link.

Users can manually enter their location data to generate maps of their route when traveling off-grid. This provides an extra layer of safety in extreme environments.

Huawei developed a communication tech called Lingxi for more reliable connections in poor signal areas like elevators and basements. Other highlights include HarmonyOS 4.0 and up to 1TB of storage.

In terms of design, Huawei offers the Mate 60 Pro in black, green, silver, and purple colorways inspired by natural landscapes. Leather and metal are combined on the back for a premium yet lively look.

The Mate 60 Pro marks another ambitious flagship from Huawei amid trade restrictions. Technologies like satellite connectivity show the company still innovates despite market challenges.

Pricing starts at 6,999 yuan (~$980) for a config with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, Huawei Mate 60 Pro seems positioned as an ultra-premium device showcasing Huawei’s technical prowess through boundary-pushing features.
