Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro Tie for First Place in DXOMARK Smartphone Display Rankings

DXOMARK has published its in-depth display test findings for Google’s latest flagship smartphones, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Both models achieved an impressive overall score of 154, tying them for first place in DXOMARK’s global smartphone display rankings.

According to their extensive lab analysis, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro offer excellent readability, color accuracy, HDR performance, and responsiveness. However, some minor issues were noted with color tinting, low light detail, edge touch sensitivity, and aliasing.

On the plus side, DXOMARK found the Pixel displays provide good legibility across various viewing conditions, with accurate target colors in most scenarios. Brightness and contrast were also deemed well-suited for HDR content playback. During DXOMARK’s touch responsiveness tests, both models exhibited smooth, fluid scrolling and gesture response.

In terms of downsides, the standard Pixel 8 showed a noticeable pinkish tint at high brightness levels depending on light angle. In very dim conditions, black level detail could slightly suffer on the Pixel 8 Pro. One-handed use sometimes led to inadvertent edge touches. Lastly, both models displayed aliasing artifacts in high motion games.

Spec-wise, the Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch 1080p OLED running at 60-120Hz with a peak of 2000 nits. Meanwhile, Pixel 8 Pro bumps this up to a 6.7-inch 1440p LTPO OLED at 1-120Hz with a brighter 2400 nit maximum. Both leverage Google’s “Actua” and “Super Actua” display branding.

By earning DXOMARK’s top display score, the Pixel 8 series continues Google’s strong showing in smartphone screen quality. With impressive lab test results across color, motion, touch, legibility, and HDR criteria, Google’s latest generation offers exceptional real-world usability. Gamers may want a higher refresh rate option, but most users should be very pleased.
