Valve has released SteamOS 3.5.5 for the Steam Deck, bringing useful display options, HDR support, and a variety of performance improvements to the handheld gaming PC.

One of the most notable additions is the new Screen Color Adjustment settings under Display Settings. Users can now tweak color vibrancy and temperature to tailor the Deck’s LCD to their preference, with options for sRGB emulation and boosted saturation.

The update also enables HDR output when connected to compatible external displays, HDR Analysis tool is provided to gauge if games properly support HDR rendering.

On the performance side, Valve says compositing has been optimized to reduce latency and stuttering when multiple on-screen overlays are present. Improvements were also made to lessen latency in situations where games render slower than the display’s refresh rate.

External monitor support receives enhancements as well. Virtual Reality Variable Rate Refresh (VRR) can now be enabled on supported USB-C adapters and monitors to reduce screen tearing. Users also gain more robust resolution and aspect ratio control for external displays.

Firmware updates improve controller thumbstick touch response and reduce intermittent connection losses. Battery life is extended thanks to a fix for display backlighting needlessly staying on.

SteamOS 3.5.5 represents a hearty update for Steam Deck owners focused on enhancing display options, gaming performance, and general quality-of-life. Valve continues to refine the Deck through consistent software updates, cementing its position as the most versatile handheld gaming system.
