My Day with the OPPO Find X7 Ultra: Impressive Imaging Power with Room to Grow

After spending a day shooting with the OPPO Find X7 Ultra, it’s clear this phone packs immense photographic capabilities – albeit with some software kinks still to iron out. As an avid smartphone photographer, I put the Find X7 through its paces, utilizing its versatile camera system in a variety of scenarios. Here are my impressions after a day of mobile photography with OPPO’s flagship.

Without a doubt, the Find X7 delivers outstanding image quality. Photos exhibit rich, natural color rendition, pleasing dynamic range, and crisp details reminiscent of a dedicated camera. The auto, portrait, master, and XPAN modes all yield professional-grade results. You can tailor settings like ISO, shutter speed, and more to fit different shooting needs. Straight out of camera, images have a refined yet playful style.

The quick capture feature also impresses. It reliably freezes dynamic scenes about 70% of the time – not perfect, but great for casual shooting. Background removal via AI works shockingly well too, making editing a breeze.

However, there are some cons marring the experience. Lens consistency is poor, with noticeable differences in color and rendering between the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto optics. The main and 3x zoom lenses perform admirably, but the other two need tuning.

Zoom transitions are also jarringly interrupted, with an odd blurring effect when switching focal lengths. The menu system lacks customization, with no way to remove video options or re-order modes. Accessing specialty features like XPAN requires digging into the “More” menu.

Additionally, the main lens can’t switch between popular primes like 35mm – an odd omission. Overall, it’s clear the software needs refinement to catch up with the stellar hardware. But issues like inconsistent lenses can likely be mitigated through updates.

For all its flaws, the imaging capabilities of the Find X7 Ultra are undeniable. It captures photos most smartphone shooters could previously only dream of. With fine-tuning to lens consistency and the menu system, OPPO could have a real giant-killer on their hands. For photographers, the Find X7 is difficult to ignore despite its quirks. It hints at a future where smartphone and dedicated camera converge into one convenient device.
