Apple Watch Ultra’s microLED Display Axed: The End of a Next-Gen Dream?

In shocking news, Apple supplier ams OSRAM announced the cancellation of a “cornerstone project” to develop microLED screens, likely for the rumored Apple Watch Ultra. The company’s stock plunged nearly 40% on the news. Was this the end of the road for Apple’s microLED ambitions?

Apple guru Mark Gurman doubts the entire project was scrapped. But research firm Counterpoint agrees the doomed ams OSRAM effort likely focused on the Watch Ultra’s display. Due to low yields and high costs, Apple may have pulled the plug for now.

So what does this mean for the mythical Apple Watch Ultra? Will we ever see the supposed 2025 launch of the next-gen smartwatch with its vivid microLED display? Or will Apple stick with OLED screens for the foreseeable future?

MicroLED was touted to bring major improvements like boosted brightness, power efficiency, and contrast over OLED. But with the technology still astronomically expensive, has Apple’s dream died for now? ams OSRAM hasn’t ruled out talks with Apple to find a new supplier, leaving a glimmer of hope.

Just a few years ago, rumors swirled of microLED coming to every Apple device from the Watch to iPad Pro. But with this major setback, how long will we wait for the next generation display tech? Apple spent billions acquiring MicroLED firm LuxVue in 2014 – was that money wasted?

While the Watch Ultra’s fate remains unclear, thisSupplier cancellation deals a huge blow to Apple’s microLED ambitions. The road to truly revolutionary display tech just got bumpier. Will Tim Cook scrap his next-gen vision, or search for a new partner to make microLED a reality? For now, the Ultra’s microLED screen seems destined to remain a legend.
