The Shape of Mac to Come? Ming-Chi Kuo Teases Apple’s Foldable MacBook Plans

Apple’s foldable ambitions have been the subject of endless speculation and rumors, but a new tweet from the ever-reliable Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the company is cooking up something truly unique – a foldable MacBook.

In a tweet that’s sure to set the Apple rumor mill into overdrive, Kuo revealed that his latest “survey indicates that currently, Apple’s only foldable product with a clear development schedule is the 20.3-inch MacBook, expected to enter mass production in 2027.”

A foldable MacBook sounds borderline bonkers, but it could allow Apple to blend the versatility of a tablet with the productivity prowess of a laptop. Folded, you’d get a chunky but ultra-portable multi-touch tablet. Unfolded, it would transform into a seriously supersized laptop with oodles of screen real estate.

From November 15, 2023 news from Gizmoweek, Apple patent hints at advanced color and brightness control for foldable devices: Apple has been granted a new patent that provides clues into Apple’s work on foldable device displays, patent outlines methods to dynamically control color and brightness between the upper and lower portions of a foldable screen.

Apple Patent Control for Foldable Devices

Of course, foldable displays are still an emerging technology plagued by creasing woes. But, as Kuo notes, “This product is foldable anyway, so concerns about creases are inevitable, but Apple’s goal is to make creases much better than those of competitors, almost invisible.” That’s an quintessentially Apple move – take an existing tech, buff out the rough edges, and dazzle us with the polished result.

A 2027 launch puts this foldable MacBook squarely in the realm of long-range rumor, it’s a tantalizing glimpse at how Apple could reimagine portable computing. Bendable laptops felt like a fever dream just a few years ago. Now, it seems, the foldable future is folding closer than we might have imagined.
