Google Wallet’s Clever New Trick Banishes Gmail Inbox Clutter

If you’re the type who winds up scouring your email every time you need to dig up a movie ticket or boarding pass, Google has a neat new quality-of-life upgrade that should cut down on inbox rummaging. Google announced that Wallet will automatically import digital passes and tickets straight from your Gmail confirmations.

Yep, whenever you get an email with those all-important QR codes and barcodes attached, Wallet will identify and save them for you, no manual importing required. According to Google, the feature is already live for “some global movie chains and airlines,” with more partners being added over time.

It’s a relatively minor but incredibly handy addition that should help cut down on email clutter and last-minute ticket scrambling. Instead of leaving those confirmations to gather virtual dust in your inbox, they’ll be neatly compiled in Wallet, ready to go with a couple of taps.

Speaking of cleaning up that digital junk drawer, Google also revealed you can now manually archive passed digital tickets and boarding passes within Wallet itself (on both mobile and WearOS). Anything you’ve already used or don’t need front-and-center anymore can quickly be swept aside to an “Archived Passes” section, keeping your main view uncluttered.

Between the automated Gmail imports and new archiving options, Wallet is shaping up to be an increasingly capable replacement for that weathered old physical wallet stuffed with crumpled stubs and disappearing strips of paper. Sure, we may be a ways off from making physical passes obsolete, but every smart digital upgrade gets us a little closer to that paper-free future.

Now if only Google Wallet could automate stubbing our toes on airplane seatback video screens during the boarding process. One minor convenience at a time, we suppose.
