Huawei is taking a swing at conquering one of the final frontiers of smartphone photography: capturing fast motion with pro-level clarity and quality. Powered by Huawei’s industry-first XD Motion engine, ultra-fast flash shooting utilizes real-time dual exposure to basically give the sensor two shutters operating simultaneously when shooting fast action. One quick exposure freezes the subject’s motion for maximum sharpness, while a longer exposure grabs all the background detail. Some deft AI motion compensation then aligns and blends the two for a final shot that’s high-quality, high-contrast, and high-dynamic-range.
“It’s not just about capturing the moment; it’s about capturing it beautifully,” an Huawei official explained of the ultra-fast flash shooting tech.
Dual Exposure Wars: Huawei Fires Back at Apple, OPPO
Of course, Huawei isn’t the only phone maker tackling instantaneous dual exposure for freezing fast action blur-free. OPPO product manager says:
“Apple’s iPhone was the first to adopt and perfect this technology. The Oppo Find X7 series was the first Android device to implement instantaneous dual exposure,” he said. “Relying solely on traditional exposure controls for capturing fast-moving subjects cannot overcome the inherent limitations of smartphone hardware. This is why we believe computational photography is the fundamental solution.”
But Huawei is confident its unique XD Motion engine and sensor system design give the Pura70 an edge. “We’ve developed a new generation of sensor systems that not only deliver greater light intake but also work in conjunction with our proprietary XD Motion engine,” Huawei Terminal BG CTO Li Xiaolong explained. “This enables dual exposure with motion compensation, resulting in high-quality video capture at high frame rates.”
Only more rigorous real-world testing will prove if Huawei has indeed leapfrogged its dual exposure rivals. But in the endless battle to perfect smartphone cameras, the Pura70’s ultra-fast flash shooting seems like the latest volley in an arms race destined to wage on for years to come.
