Huawei Pura 70 Duo Brings Crazy Cameras and Satellite Comms

Huawei unleashes imaging madness with the Pura 70 series, just when you thought smartphone cameras were tapping out on innovation, with the launch of its overhauled Pura 70 series. This dynamic duo of flagship handsets is pulling out all the stops on imaging prowess.

Let’s start with that wild Ultra spotlight camera system. The Pura 70 Pro and Pro Ultra both rock a unique variable aperture main shooter that can shift between f/1.4 for low-light situations all the way to f/4.0 for more control. We’re talking legit big 1/1.3″ sensors here, not your typical tiny mobile cam fare.

But perhaps the zaniest camera trick up Huawei’s sleeve is the Ultra spotlight macro telephoto lens sporting an insane f/2.1 aperture, allows the phones to capture scarily detailed 35x magnified macro shots, letting you go full Ant-Man on tiny subjects. Good luck trying to find a sharper macro camera on any other handset.

Of course, Huawei didn’t stop there, Pura 70 Ultra rocks a massive 1″ main sensor, sensor-shift OIS, and a potentially telescoping lens system to keep things compact. There are also all sorts of AI video enhancements like high dynamic range recording and “Super AIS” stabilization.

Huawei Pura 70 Ultra’s camera boasts a 1-inch sensor with f/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift stabilization. The main camera features a rotating telescopic lens structure, likely inspired by classic point-and-shoot cameras. Upon powering on (when taking pictures), the lens automatically extends, primarily to avoid the large-bottomed main camera from protruding excessively. However, the more surprising aspect is Huawei’s implementation of waterproofing for the retractable lens structure.

Surprisingly, one of the Pura 70’s biggest flexes may be its satellite communication skills – a first for any smartphone. The Pro model can send messages over the BeiDou satellite network when there’s no terrestrial coverage. But splurge for the Pro Ultra, and you get full voice call capabilities over satellite, in addition to messaging.

The rest of the spec sheets check all the requisite flagship boxes. A blazing 6.8″ 120Hz OLED display, ultra-durable Kunlun glass shielding, beastly 5050mAh battery with 100W wired/80W wireless charging, and of course Huawei’s latest top-tier silicon.

With prices ranging from RMB 6,499 to RMB 8,999 (roughly $900 to $1,250 USD), these powerhouse handsets aren’t going to be cheap thrills. But few phones out there can match the sheer imaging and connectivity firepower packed into the Pura 70 lineup.

Between the versatile aperture play, macro photography talents, satellite link-up capabilities, and all the other imaging spectacles, Huawei is flexing harder than ever on mobile optics. It’s extra – in the best and most excessive way imaginable.
