Extensive Google Pixel 8 Leaks Point to Strategic Marketing Shift
leaked benchmarks from review site PBKreviews reveal a sizable performance gap between the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models sharing the same Tensor G3 chip.
In Geekbench 6 testing, the Pixel 8 Pro scored 11% higher on single-core performance and 7% faster for multi-core versus the regular Pixel 8.
The Pixel 8 also lagged behind in 3DMark’s Wild Life graphics stress testing. PBKreviews believes the differences point to inadequate cooling on the Pixel 8 throttling sustained performance.
Both phones exhibited concerning peak temperatures above 42°C in testing. But the Pixel 8 appears to be throttling sooner to avoid overheating, hampering real-world speed.
With two models utilizing the same Tensor G3 silicon, performance should be on par. The leaked figures suggest Google still has work to do optimizing its in-house chip thermal characteristics.
Slower sustained speeds on the Pixel 8 due to heat could impact experiences like gaming and other intensive apps compared to the Pro. But performance should still exceed Tensor G2 models.
Of course, Google may tweak the Pixel 8’s cooling and throttling behavior before launch to narrow the gap. The early hardware tested may not reflect the final experience.
But the leaked benchmarks emphasize the engineering effort required to extract maximum efficiency and performance from Google’s Tensor chips. There’s still clear room for refinement compared to rivals. Delivering a consistent experience across both new Pixel phones remains a challenge.
