Sony stunned PlayStation fans by announcing a price increase for PS Plus subscriptions coming September 6th. The adjustments impact the Extra and Premium annual plans, while monthly and quarterly tiers remain unchanged.
Starting November 6th, the yearly Essential plan rises from $59.99 to $79.99. Extra jumps from $99.99 to $134.99 per year. And the Premium tier goes up to $159.99 annually, a $40 increase.
In a statement, SIE’s Adam Michel cited providing “high-quality games” and “more revenue” for justifying the first major PS Plus price hike. But the lack of warning or added value has angered many subscribers.
Critics point out Sony’s failure to communicate the change as a breaking of trust. The company also stopped disclosing PS Plus user figures in March, fueling distrust.
Notable industry figures blasted the move across social media. Traxion’s Derek Strickland called it “another example of Sony having no clue how to handle a subscription service properly.”
Without substantive improvements, increasing costs of a beloved service feels like indifference towards loyal fans. Especially considering latest underwhelming PS Plus monthly game lineups.

Sony previously expressed confidence in the Premium tier’s appeal, claiming most opted for the highest $119.99 plan. But pricier subscriptions face stagnating spending on gaming services in major markets like North America.
By alienating portions of its vast 100+ million PS4/PS5 installed base, Sony risks damaging brand loyalty and engagement. This could drive some towards rival platforms.
While seeking greater revenue, Sony needs to avoid perceptions of greed and lack of care for players. Price hikes should come with proportional added value, communication, and respect for user bases.
Sony still has opportunities to rebuild goodwill. Introducing live service benefits into higher tiers like free DLC packs could help soften the blow. As could giving advance notice and locking users into pre-increase pricing.
For now, outrage over the surprise PS Plus price hike looms large in PlayStation communities. Sony faces an uphill battle regaining trust across its subscription services going forward.
Strong consumer backlash shows Sony failed to read the room this time. But hopefully the company learns its lesson – substantiate value increases and don’t blindside your most dedicated fans.
