Samsung Launches First GDDR7 Memory with 32Gbps Speed and 1.5TBps Bandwidth

Samsung is making a splash in the memory market with the announcement of its pioneering GDDR7 memory, slated to take high-performance computing to the next level. This new blazing fast memory boasts a max speed of 32Gbps, screeching past the previous GDDR6 standard capped at 24Gbps.

Additionally, GDDR7 touts a mind-blowing max bandwidth of 1.5TBps, a whopping 1.4 times increase over GDDR6. Samsung also optimized energy efficiency, with GDDR7 sipping 20% less power versus its predecessor.

Samsung already completed developing GDDR7 and plans initial testing with major clients later this year. The company aims to prep the cutting-edge memory for the future graphics card market.

Following its rollout of 24Gbps 16Gb GDDR6 memory last year, Samsung says its new 16Gb GDDR7 memory clocks the highest speed yet for a Samsung memory at 32Gbps. Innovations in integrated circuit design and packaging tech also improve performance stability during its warp speed operation.

GDDR7’s incredible 1.5TBps bandwidth is 1.4 times GDDR6’s 1.1TBps. Each blazing fast data input/output (I/O) port transfers at 32Gbps. The memory utilizes pulse amplitude modulation 3 (PAM3) signaling rather than the previous generation’s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signaling, massively amplifying performance. PAM3 signaling can transmit 50% more data than NRZ in the same signal cycle.

Samsung baked in energy-saving tech suited for high-speed operation when designing GDDR7, improving energy efficiency by 20% over GDDR6. Samsung also offers a low voltage option targeting power-prioritizing devices like laptops.

To tame heat from the scorching memory chips, Samsung uses epoxy molding compounds boasting high thermal conductivity for packaging. This, combined with optimizing the IC architecture, slashes thermal resistance a sizeable 70% compared to GDDR6. The enhancements significantly reduce heat while enabling GDDR7’s stable screaming fast speeds.

Samsung remained mum about which upcoming products will first integrate the new GDDR7 memory, only saying it plans initial testing with major clients later this year. First graphics cards featuring GDDR7 are expected in the latter half of 2024, with the RTX 50 series pegged as the top contender. However, Nvidia previously hinted the RTX 50 series may not drop until 2025 due to shifting market demands.
