iOS 17.2 RC Brings Faster Qi2 Wireless Charging to iPhone 13 / 14

Apple seeded the iOS 17.2 Release Candidate update to developers and public beta users. Beyond the typical bug fixes and optimizations, the incremental update introduces compatibility for the new Qi2 standard promising accelerated wireless charging speeds. With iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 owners first benefitting from the ratified specification, what enhancements should device owners expect?

Primarily, Qi2 charging leverages magnetic alignment and power distribution mapping to bolster power delivery efficiency between capable chargers and phones. This translates to faster top-up times compared to traditional Qi accessories relying on imprecise coil positioning that hampers energy transfer.

Additionally, the Wireless Power Consortium behind Qi2 mandates conforming chargers offer improved charge rate transparency and temperature regulation for protecting battery longevity across multiple brands. So iPhone users gain versatility without compromising safety.

Qi2 chargers advertise up to 15w inductive charging, However, Apple’s tech specs still retain 7.5W labels.

Of course owners await compatible Apple-certified Qi2 accessories for optimal charging cooperation, latest iPhone 15 lineup ships Qi2-ready out of the box, while iPhone 13/14 users gain compatibility through iOS 17.2.

Going forward, modern Qi2’s provisions aim to eliminate lingering wireless charging pain points like specific coil placement. The specification targets ubiquitous charging networks where handsets intuitively clip onto inductive hotspots. iPhone owners stand to tap an increasingly seamless, cable-free future dictated by advancing convenience standards.

Have you tried Qi2 yet, or are mats and stands still charging old-school Qi style?
