Xiaomi isn’t waiting around. The company dropped fresh details about its Xiaomi 17 Ultra today, zeroing in on what appears to be a substantial upgrade to low-light camera performance. Messaging? Night scenes will look more accurate and lifelike than what current hardware can deliver.
Imaging system represents a joint effort between Xiaomi and Leica. At the core sits a Leica-branded 1-inch high-dynamic-range main camera working alongside a 200MP optical zoom configuration. Xiaomi frames this as a significant advancement in handling challenging lighting conditions, particularly when ambient light drops off.
Technical specifications reveal the main sensor uses 1-inch LOFIC architecture. That’s lateral overflow integration capacitor technology, designed specifically to prevent blown-out highlights in high-contrast scenarios. Lens opens to F1.67, allowing more light to hit the sensor during exposure.
Periscope telephoto unit packs that 200-megapixel sensor behind an F2.9 aperture. Focal length coverage spans 14mm through 100mm equivalent, translating to approximately 4.3× optical zoom capability. Flexibility here—enough range to handle everything from wide environmental shots to tighter framing without digital interpolation.
Reports suggest Xiaomi opted for a JN5 sensor on the ultra-wide camera. That’s a more modest component compared to the main and telephoto systems. Rationale seems straightforward: users don’t lean on ultra-wide lenses as frequently, so engineers reallocated internal space toward the cameras that matter most in real-world usage.
Physical changes are visible too. 17 Ultra moves away from circular volume controls to separated buttons. Display remains flat, though corners feature pronounced rounding. Rear camera module abandons its previous circular housing for a tighter triple-camera layout, cutting down on how much the optics protrude from the chassis.
Official unveiling lands December 25 at 7:00 PM during the Xiaomi × Leica Imaging Strategy Upgrade event. The company teased what it calls the “next-generation Xiaomi Night God” alongside the device itself, emphasizing fundamental changes to telephoto optics and promising measurable improvements when shooting after dark. Looks like the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is ready to shed some light on the competition.
