Xiaomi’s Next-Gen CyberDog 2 Wows with Enhanced Speed and Senses

Xiaomi has unveiled the latest iteration of its cybernetic quadruped, the CyberDog 2, during a launch event for the company’s new lineup of smart devices. The biomimetic robot is designed to closely resemble a Doberman Pinscher while featuring upgraded hardware and software for more lifelike movement and environmental perception.

The CyberDog 2 comes equipped with 12 of Xiaomi’s new in-house developed CyberGear micro motors, delivering 50% more torque precision compared to the previous generation motors used in the first CyberDog. Combined with advanced motion control algorithms, CyberDog 2 has significantly improved locomotion capabilities, able to run at speeds up to 1.6m/s and perform delicate maneuvers like skateboarding.

The sensor suite has also been enhanced. CyberDog 2 incorporates new laser radar and touch sensors for better spatial awareness and navigation. According to Xiaomi, the fusion of multiple sensor inputs and AI-powered decision making gives CyberDog 2 the ability to track objects, avoid obstacles, and interact through gestures and voice commands.

At the core is an AI engine providing 21 TOPS of computing power to handle visual, voice, and sensor data. Xiaomi says CyberDog 2 has autonomously trained in 30,000 simulated environments to develop canine-like balance and movement. The biomimetic design and behaviors are meant to make CyberDog 2 seem more dog than robot.

While still an open platform for further development, the CyberDog 2 represents a major upgrade over the first gen CyberDog revealed last year. More compact and friendly in appearance, yet with expanded capabilities in mobility, perception, and interactions, this cybernetic pet hints at a promising future for Xiaomi’s robotics program. The 12 CyberGear motors used in CyberDog 2 are also now available for purchase by third-party developers and roboticists.
