Apple Watch Ultra 2 Refinement Focuses on Display, Faces, and Bands

The second iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra sees only minor, incremental upgrades following its initial release Ultra first gen. While keeping core capabilities mostly unchanged, Apple brought select improvements to display quality, watch faces, and band options.

Apple Watch Series 9 with New S9 Chip, Double Tap Control, Color Loop Bands and Price

As with the Series 9, the Ultra 2 adopts Apple’s latest S9 SiP chip. This enables support for new features like double-tap gestures, on-device Siri processing, and enhanced health tracking. Ultra wideband integration powers precise finding when paired with iPhone 15 models.

Watch Ultra 2 pulls ahead in a few specific areas:

First, it significantly boosts screen brightness to a maximum 3000 nits – 50% brighter than the original Ultra. Temporarily doubling the brightness via the digital crown enhances usability of the built-in flashlight, see WatchOS 10 Experience Running Watch Ultra.

A new modular watch face takes advantage of the large display real estate to showcase live data like seconds, altitude changes, or underwater depth for diving. It offers the most customizable sports and outdoor activity tracking of any Apple Watch face.

The new bands not only contribute to a greener planet but also add a splash of color to your wrist. The Alpine Loop band is available in blue, indigo, and olive, while the Wilderness Loop band brings in shades of orange with beige, green with gray, and blue with black. The Ocean band introduces two fresh color options: blue and orange.

In X, Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “Today we announced Apple’s first carbon neutral products with models of Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE. By 2030, all of our products will be carbon neutral!”

So while not radically reinventing the Ultra, Apple focused on refining the screen, watch faces, and bands to better serve athletes and adventurers. It brings thoughtful but minor upgrades to the premium outdoor watch that watch ultra.
