Samsung Plans Bringing microLED Display Technology to Smartwatches

Samsung has revealed through its official Newsroom that it is exploring bringing microLED display technology to smaller form factors like smartwatches. If implemented, this could allow Samsung to achieve brilliant image quality and battery life improvements in future wearables.

MicroLED offers key advantages over the OLED displays commonly used in today’s smartwatches. The self-emissive microLED pixels deliver much higher brightness, viewing angles, and durability. MicroLED also eliminates the need for backlighting, improving energy efficiency.

Samsung Galaxy Watch6 Series: The Perfect Blend of Style and Functionality

Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch models rely on OLED screens. But with Apple aggressively adopting mini and microLED in its Watch Ultra and latest iPads, Samsung risks falling behind in display innovation. Its expectation that OLED would remain the high-end choice is proving outdated.

By adapting microLED down to the smartwatch size category, Samsung could regain an edge with eye-catching visuals and always-on capability. This would cement the Galaxy Watch as a premium wearable showcase on par with smartphones.

Samsung already manufactures large-format microLED in its display division. But mass producing microLED at the tiny scale required for 1-2 inch smartwatch panels introduces new challenges.

Reports indicate Samsung is still in the research phase for microLED wearables. But its public acknowledgement of active development confirms microLED is part of its future product roadmap.

As the global leader in advanced display technologies, Samsung is signaling it will continue pushing boundaries. It recognizes the value successful microLED implementation could bring to the Galaxy Watch lineup.

Expect Samsung to close the gap with mini/microLED development over the next 1-2 years. And for premium segments like smartwatches where it still trails rival Apple, stunning next-gen microLED displays could help the Galaxy Watch reclaim its standing.
