Samsung Reveals 50MP ISOCELL GNK Sensor with Dual Pixel Pro AF and 8K Video

Samsung has taken the wraps off its newest image sensor, 50-megapixel ISOCELL GNK. The sensor looks to deliver premium photography and videography capabilities for upcoming flagship smartphones.

On paper, the 1/1.3” ISOCELL GNK matches specs of Samsung’s earlier 50MP GN1 sensor, including the same 1.2-micron pixel size, but the company has packed in several new technologies to enable enhanced imaging.

Key improvements include Dual Pixel Pro auto-focus, Smart ISO Pro for optimal light sensitivity, and staggered HDR for improved dynamic range, GNK also introduces 14-bit RAW capture for richer colors and gradients.

For video, the sensor can record up to 8K resolution footage at 30 fps, GNK provides flawless 4K recording at up to 120 fps for silky smooth slow motion. Samsung credits the sensor’s low noise and high light sensitivity for such stellar video specs.

Samsung says the ISOCELL GNK achieves the industry’s highest dynamic range (HDR) based on a unique “staggered-HDR” method. It uses a nona-binning algorithm to combine information from nine pixels into one, preserves details in bright and dark areas simultaneously.

ISOCELL GNK also the first Samsung sensor to offer Dual Pixel Pro phase detection auto-focus, applies focus detection across the entire sensor area for quick, accurate focusing even on off-center subjects.

Meanwhile, Smart-ISO Pro selects the optimal light sensitivity settings automatically, enhances dynamic range while minimizing noise for difficult shots with mixed lighting.

As sensors push megapixel counts higher, managing noise becomes increasingly critical, Samsung’s optimizations allow the 50MP GNK to shoot vibrant low-light images.

Report from TechInsights Samsung and Sony sensors dominate smartphone cameras in 2023, ISOCELL JN1 camera sensor tops the rankings based on shipments, used as a secondary camera in many phones, Sony continues to dominate the smartphone image sensor industry with 56% market share in the first half of 2023, LYTIA brand LYTIA brand is set to shake up the smartphone photography game with five new 50-megapixel sensors, Exmor T CMOS Sensor work in Xperia 1 V phones.

While specific phones weren’t announced, the GNK appears destined for premium Android flagships, well-rounded photography toolkit could give Samsung another imaging edge over rivals.

New sensor joins Samsung’s expanding lineup including the versatile 200MP HP1, as smartphones become primary cameras for many, sensor advancements like the ISOCELL GNK will enable photos and videos that weren’t possible just a few years ago. Expect samples from the new 50MP module to surface once it begins appearing in 2024 phones.
