Lexie Liu Makes History with “delulu” Music Video Shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max

Chinese singer-songwriter Lexie Liu recently released her latest single “delulu,” along with a music video directed by renowned fashion photographer Jeremy Qin. Captured entirely using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, this video marks a milestone for Liu as the first Chinese female artist to use iPhone filmmaking for a commercial music video production.

Tim Cook even congratulated Liu and Qin on Weibo for their groundbreaking collaboration. So what enabled the iPhone 15 Pro Max to empower Liu’s creative vision?

From a young age, Liu stood out for her determination to break boundaries. She performed at the renowned SXSW festival in Austin at 18 – the first Chinese female artist ever to do so. In 2019, her song made the year-end Apple Music charts in both China and the U.S. – a remarkable cross-cultural achievement.

For “delulu,” Liu conveys a melancholic romantic dreamer’s inner world through soulful melodies. The song’s whimsical title captures Liu’s hope: “May your delusions come true.” To visualize these emotions, she turned to Jeremy Qin, an ascending filmmaker making waves in fashion circles. Though Qin had never shot a full music video on iPhone before, he and Liu saw eye-to-eye on an ambitious idea – why not capture Liu’s whole world through iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Over just two days of testing and shooting, Qin and Liu produced scenes that astonished even themselves. Spontaneously struck with inspiration, the team shot Liu dramatically bursting through a wall, phone-in-hand. Such vivid stunts became possible thanks to iPhone 15 Pro Max’s remarkably compact form factor. Liu marveled at the shooting experience, deeming it “truly fantastic.”

So what convinced these creative professionals to film solely on iPhone 15 Pro Max? Beyond its ultra-portable size, Apple’s latest offers best-in-class image quality for filmmakers needing flexibility and creative control on set. Built-in 5x telephoto lens also proved invaluable to Qin, enabling more expressive flattened perspectives perfect for evocative glimpses into Liu’s world.

Yet the expanded video format support is what Qin notes as truly game-changing. With RAW ProRes and Log recording, plus external SSD connectivity, iOS 17 empowers seamless integration with pro production pipelines. Using Blackmagic’s Camera app for advanced control, Qin could monitor and record Liu’s performances as if shooting on cinema cameras, pro-tier functionality finally brings iPhone up to par for serious filmmakers.

By boldly capturing Liu’s imaginative realm solely through iPhone 15 Pro Max, Qin and Liu remind us that boundary-breaking creativity ultimately comes not just from tools, but from the spark within artists willing to try new things. Still, Apple’s pocket-sized powerhouse offers capabilities that can unlock fresh creative perspectives – if we open our minds to iPhone 15 Pro Max’s possibilities.
