Xiaomi Unveils New HyperOS to Power its Expanding Ecosystem

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun announced the launch of Xiaomi HyperOS, a new unified operating system aimed at powering the company’s growing ecosystem of connected devices and services. Lei Jun described the introduction of HyperOS as a groundbreaking milestone for Xiaomi.

HyperOS combines an evolved Android OS with Xiaomi’s in-house Vela OS to create a common foundation for interconnectivity across smartphones, smart home appliances, vehicles, and more. According to Lei Jun, HyperOS development started in 2017 to address ecosystem fragmentation challenges as Xiaomi expanded beyond smartphones into over 200 product categories.

The new OS framework rewrite provides unified system support for the full range of current and future Xiaomi devices. It also enables seamless integration and control of a diverse array of appliances and services for homes, vehicles, and personal use cases.

By consolidating its operating system stack into HyperOS, Xiaomi aims to break down barriers caused by disparate systems and protocols as its ecosystem grows. This people-centric OS approach focuses on delivering intuitive and intelligent cross-device experiences to users.

The first device launching with HyperOS will be the upcoming Xiaomi 14 smartphone. Lei Jun indicated this model will bring a revolutionary upgrade to the user experience thanks to the new OS capabilities. The unified foundation of HyperOS will enable tighter integration between Xiaomi’s smartphones, wearables, home appliances, and more.

Lei Jun noted that “starting today, we will gradually bid farewell to MIUI!” MIUI is the Android-based OS skin that has powered Xiaomi phones since the company’s beginnings. While it served Xiaomi well in the smartphone era, HyperOS represents a new chapter powering Xiaomi’s larger smart ecosystem.

Based on Google GMS services, we believe that at this stage, it will only be adapted for the Chinese market, while the international version will continue to come pre-installed with MIUI 15.

The launch of HyperOS underscores Xiaomi’s ambitions as a leading technology brand spanning multiple connected domains. By providing robust cross-device experiences, HyperOS strengthens Xiaomi’s ecosystem approach. It promises to make interacting with a multitude of Xiaomi products and services more streamlined than ever.
