MIUI 15 out of the box in global markets, In China as Xiaomi May Shifts to MiOS

According to a recent report, MIUI 14 will be the last major version release of Xiaomi’s Android skin in its home market of China. The company is rumored to be shifting focus to a new operating system called MiOS going forward.

MIUI 14 delivered iterative improvements like refreshed UI elements, widgets, and folder designs. But with Xiaomi now registering “mios.cn” domains, MiOS appears poised to succeed MIUI in China.

Details remain scarce on MiOS for now. It will likely utilize a more AOSP-based codebase instead of the heavy MIUI modifications. The OS changeover is currently only planned for mainland China, with MIUI expected to continue for global Xiaomi devices.

In fact, Xiaomi has already begun testing MIUI 15 updates adapted for phones like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra and Redmi K60 Pro. These devices are slated to ship with MIUI 15 out of the box in global markets later this year.

For Chinese users, MIUI 14 looks to be a farewell of sorts for the iconic Xiaomi skin. After a decade-plus run, MIUI is stepping aside for a new MiOS era in China. The MIUI brand will live on internationally, where MIUI 15 is prepping for release.

The strategy poses risks if MiOS suffers growing pains in early iterations. But leaning on a more standard Android base could pay dividends for Xiaomi in its largest market. Chinese consumers will be the first to experience life after MIUI as MiOS readies for the spotlight.
