From Mark Gurman latest Power On newsletter, Apple is currently developing a new Mac external display that can also serve as a smart home display in low-power mode. This is a major shift in the market and could change the way people interact with their smart homes.
This new display will feature an iOS device chip and software stack, similar to the Studio Display’s Center Stage and spatial audio features. But what’s really exciting is that when not in use as a monitor, this new display can transform into a smart home control center, allowing users to conveniently manage their various smart devices.
OS interface of this smart display may be similar to the standby function in iOS 17 for iPhones. Gurman noted that this smart display is still in the development phase and is unlikely to be launched until next year at the earliest.
Currently, Apple offers two monitors for sale: the 6K Pro Display XDR and the 5K Apple Studio Display. While the 6K monitor boasts superior color and overall quality compared to the consumer-oriented Studio Display, it lacks some of the newer features such as a video camera and an A-Series chips.
It seems that Apple is once again pushing the boundaries of innovation with this new smart display, which promises to bring the convenience of smart home management and the functionality of a high-quality monitor together in a single device. As an Apple fan, I can’t wait to see what other features Apple will add to this new monitor and how it will enhance the user experience.
With Apple’s track record of innovation and quality, it’s no surprise that the company is leading the charge in the smart home display market. And while we may have to wait a bit longer for this new display to hit the market, the wait will undoubtedly be worth it for the convenience and versatility it promises to bring to our homes.
