Apple Unveils Lower-Cost USB-C Apple Pencil 3 with magnetic tips for $79

Apple has introduced an all-new Apple Pencil 3 with magnetic tips featuring a USB-C port and reduced $79 price tag. Slated for availability in early November, the USB-C Apple Pencil represents a budget alternative to the premium second-gen model.

The new pencil trades away features like pressure sensitivity, wireless charging, and double tap gestures to achieve the lower cost. It charges via USB-C rather than magnetically attaching or wirelessly inducting. Engraving is also not offered on the latest model.

However, the $79 USB-C Apple Pencil maintains support for magnetic attachment to recent iPad models and the same latency and precision of its pricier siblings. It works with the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and 10th generation iPad.

For customers seeking an entry-level drawing and writing experience on their iPad, the USB-C Apple Pencil 3 hits a more affordable price point compared to the $129 second-gen. It could appeal to students and casual users who don’t require pro creative features.

The second-generation Apple Pencil still offers advantages for artists and other power users like pressure sensitivity, tap gestures, wireless convenience, and premium materials. But the new no-frills USB-C model makes iPad pencil support more attainable at $50 less.

While not yet a direct competitor to very low cost styluses from third parties, Apple’s new $79 pencil brings its trademark quality and seamless iPad integration to a reduced price. This could help expand the company’s accessories revenue from its enormous iPad installed base.

The third-generation Apple Pencil with USB-C charging caters to the cost-conscious segment among Apple’s user base. It retains core pencil functionality for a much lower commitment. For many basic pencil uses, the latest $79 model gets the iPad writing and drawing job done.
